Do's and Don'ts: Perfume Storage

Whether you've been loyal to your favorite fragrance for years or prefer wearing a new one every day, good perfume comes at a certain price. With a few tricks, you can easily extend the shelf life of your fragrances so they always smell like the first day.

Do's: Tips for long shelf life

The right temperature

Keep it cool: Store your fragrances in a cool place with a constant temperature to extend their shelf life and thus preserve the quality of the fragrance.

The right storage location

Not only does good climate control extend the shelf life of your perfume, but so does the right storage location. It should be dry and dark. Ideally, away from direct sunlight—alternatively, you can, of course, store your perfume in its packaging. By the way: Our fragrances not only look incredibly beautiful in the stylish, dark bottles, but they also protect them from sunlight.

Proper storage

It's best to store your perfumes upright to prevent accidental leaks. Also, always close your perfume with the included cap to minimize contact with oxygen.

Don'ts: 3 Mistakes When Storing Perfume

Perfume in the bathroom

Did you know that it's better not to store your perfume in the bathroom? The reason for this is that temperature fluctuations and high humidity can negatively impact the quality and shelf life of your perfume.

Shake perfume

Avoid moving or shaking your perfumes unnecessarily. This can allow air to enter the falcon, which can accelerate oxidation and reduce the shelf life of your fragrances.

Perfume on the windowsill

Even if your perfume collection fits perfectly on your windowsill, sunlight will age your perfume faster and can affect its quality. Therefore, a sunny spot like your windowsill is not a suitable place to store your fragrances. If absolutely necessary, you can of course simply store your perfumes in their boxes.

Perfume durability – How long does a perfume last?

The shelf life of a perfume depends largely on whether it has already been opened or is still sealed. Once a perfume is opened and comes into contact with air, the oxidation process begins, causing the chemical composition of the fragrance to change over time. The shelf life of an opened perfume depends on several factors, including the quality of the ingredients, the concentration of the fragrance oils, and the storage conditions. An opened perfume typically lasts about 1 to 3 years, while a sealed perfume can last about 3 to 5 years or even longer if stored properly.

FAQ

Can you store perfume in the refrigerator?

We advise against storing perfume in the refrigerator, as condensation, light, and odors can affect its quality and fragrance. Instead, store perfume in a cool, dry, and dark place to preserve its shelf life.

Why store perfume in the dark?

Perfume should be stored in a dark place to minimize exposure to light. Light can alter the chemical composition of the perfume and lead to accelerated aging, causing the fragrance to lose quality and intensity more quickly. Dark storage keeps the perfume fresh and authentic for longer.

Can perfume be stored lying down?

Yes, perfume can be stored lying down if the bottle is tightly closed. Storing it lying down can help minimize the perfume's contact with air and thus reduce oxidation. However, if the bottle is already open, we advise against it, as it could otherwise leak.

How do you know when a perfume has expired?

An expired perfume can be identified by a changed or unpleasant smell, a reduced fragrance intensity, discoloration in the bottle, or the appearance of cloudiness or deposits. If the perfume no longer has its characteristic scent or even smells unpleasant, you should replace it.
