5 Hair Care Tips for Men

#1: Don't wash your hair too often
Not too often and not too hot! Daily washing with hair shampoo dries out your scalp too much – hot water additionally enhances this effect. On average, it is sufficient to wash your hair every two to three days with a mild hair shampoo. Our tip: Gently dry your hair with a towel after washing – aggressive rubbing dry is out of place.

#2: Use a high-quality and suitable hair shampoo
Many hair shampoos for men contain aggressive chemicals that deliver great results at first glance, but cause more problems after a short time. For example, they dry out the scalp too much, contain microplastics or can even increase the risk of hair loss. In general, natural cosmetics are a good start, because a large part of what you use for your hair gets into your body through the pores of your scalp.

#3: Minimize negative external influences
Saltwater, chlorine, dry heating air, perms, bleaching, aggressive care products and your diet: all these factors are examples of external factors that negatively affect the quality of your hair – and which can be avoided more or less easily. For example, if you spend a lot of time in the sun and by the sea or pool and don't want to do without it, headwear and vegetable oils like coconut or argan oil are a good protective solution.

#4: Less is more
There are now many hair care and styling products. But not every product is necessary for you. So before you equip yourself with half a drugstore shelf, first determine whether you tend to have dry or oily hair. Then: a few high-quality products are better than many that promise everything but deliver nothing.
Start with a high-quality hair shampoo, and depending on your hair type and length, your hair and scalp will also appreciate hair oil or a conditioner. You can find out more about the individual hair types and useful products for them in the next sections.

#5: Don't put off your haircut for too long
Split ends can negatively affect the overall appearance of your hair. They might look brittle and dry, even though your ends simply need to be trimmed. A good hairdresser can also advise you on products and your optimal hair care routine for your hair type.

How to style your hair correctly

Your hair, your style! If you are unsure which haircut flatters your face shape the most, ask a trusted hairdresser. Professionals can advise you and give you styling tips. Whether it's a casual parting, wild curls or a sleek man-bun: there are no limits to your imagination.

matt paste

The most popular styling products:

Matte paste perfectly shapes short to medium-length hair without making it stiff or sticky. Additionally, the matte paste gives your hair a structured, matte finish. The matte paste is also suitable for fine or thinning hair as it creates volume and hold.
Gel
provides hold and is best for short hair. Start with a small amount and add more gradually, otherwise your hair can quickly resemble hedgehog quills – unless that's the look you're going for.
Pomade has a similar, gel-like consistency, shapes your hair like hair gel, and also gives it a nice shine. However, for particularly strong hold, gel is the better choice.
Hair wax also gives your hair a beautiful shine and creates a casual "undone" look. Again, you shouldn't use too much at once, as this can make fine hair sticky. A pea-sized amount is usually enough. Rub it between your palms and then tousle your hair into the desired shape with splayed fingers or emphasize a parting. For neat styles, you can first distribute the product through your hair and then brush it into the desired shape with a comb.
For more volume, a powder or a hair paste is ideal. Apply the product specifically to the roots. Finally, hairspray helps to fix your look. Less is more here too!
Long hair can quickly become sticky with gel. Nevertheless, you can use a little of it to enhance your desired style. Especially with long hair, start with very little styling product and slowly increase the amount.
For shine, a nourishing hair oil is great, which you can work into your ends from time to time.
Argan oil is a favorite that can also be used for scalp care. Ideally, your styling products already contain nourishing ingredients. Straighteners, curling irons, or the combination of a hairdryer and brush are also popular. Please make sure to use good heat protection here!

Causes of fine hair in men

Fine hair has a diameter of less than 0.05 millimeters, while average hair measures 0.05 to 0.07 millimeters. This sounds like an insignificant difference, but it makes a noticeable impact overall. Often, it looks as if you simply have less hair on your head. The reason for your hair diameter is your genes; there's not much you can do about that.

What helps against fine hair?

Since fine hair lies closer to the scalp, styling products that provide more volume are perfect. For example, a hair powder that you massage directly into the roots.
We advise against hair wax or gel, as these weigh down and stick the hair together. Immediately after washing your hair, you can blow-dry it against the direction of hair growth, which instantly creates more lift and thus volume.

Causes of oily hair in men

It's normal for your hair to look slightly oily after one or two days. However, if you notice this just a few hours after washing your hair, your hair is becoming oily too quickly. Excessive sebum production, frequently touching your hair with your hands, or hormonal changes can be causes of quickly oily hair in men. Also, water that is too hot and heat in general can stimulate sebum production over time.

What helps against oily hair?

Wash your hair with lukewarm or cold water and avoid constantly running your hands through your hair, as this not only stimulates sebum production but also spreads sweat and dirt from your hands into your hair. If your oily hair has a hormonal or genetic origin, you should use a mild shampoo and preferably avoid conditioner. It is also important not to use aggressive, strong degreasing shampoos, as this only provides superficial improvement. These shampoos dry out your scalp too much, which leads it to produce even more sebum. You don't want to start this vicious cycle.
Your diet has a big influence on your hair. For example, oatmeal, nuts, avocados, peppermint, and apricots prevent oily hair, while fat, sugar, and refined carbohydrates promote oily hair.
Healing clay helps your scalp break down excess sebum and dirt, and also promotes hair growth. You can use styling products like dry shampoo or powder to camouflage the oiliness. However, you should primarily address the cause – or, if it's hormonally caused, wait it out without stressing your hair and skin too much with products.

Causes of dry hair in men

The counterpart to oily hair. Here, too little sebum is produced, or your hair has lost a lot of moisture due to intense heat or hair coloring. The result is brittle and dull hair, often accompanied by split ends. Your hair and scalp are out of balance here too. But with a little help, you can quickly get it back in order.

What helps against dry hair?

If the cause of your dry hair is frequent coloring or highlights, you should take a break from these. You can counteract intense heat with headwear and protective plant oils, such as argan and coconut oil. Always rinse out chlorine and salt water thoroughly and use a high-quality, natural hair oil here too. A conditioner also provides your hair with moisture. It is important that nourishing products do not contain alcohol, silicones, or microplastics. You can find out more about why in our article on natural cosmetics.
Styling also requires caution: If a hairdryer or straightener is indispensable, use a heat protection spray and the lowest temperature. It's also worth taking a look at your plate: Nuts, whole grain products, legumes, eggs, and green vegetables, among other things, provide important B vitamins, proteins, and keratin, which restores shine and moisture to your hair.

What helps against dandruff?

Dandruff is not uncommon, but it is annoying. It's important to first distinguish whether you have dry or oily dandruff. Instead of immediately reaching for chemical anti-dandruff shampoos, find out if your dandruff is due to a fungal infection, environmental factors, stress, overly dry heating air, poor nutrition, or incorrect care and styling products. This way you can directly combat the cause and prevent dandruff at the same time.

Hair loss in men

Hair loss in men is widespread – and often no cause for concern. Because if the hairline slowly recedes or the hair on the top of the head thins, there is usually a natural, often genetically determined cause behind it. The good news: You can actively do something to strengthen your hair and give it new fullness. In addition to a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, proper care also plays a decisive role. FAQ

What influence does my diet have on my hair?

With a balanced diet, you can additionally support your hair. Oatmeal makes your hair shine, beans help against dandruff, salmon supports a healthy scalp, and broccoli and eggs stimulate hair growth.

What is good for men's hair?

High-quality care products, such as a mild and moisturizing shampoo and good plant oils. Your products should be free of silicones and microplastics. A balanced diet and avoiding harmful environmental influences such as strong heat or coloring are also good for your hair and scalp.
Our tip: To save plastic and money, we recommend our shampoo refill. With the 1-liter canister, you can refill your Brooklyn Soap Shampoo and save 60% plastic at the same time!

Why is shower gel bad for hair in the long run?

Shower gel is tailored to the needs of your skin. Your scalp, like your hair, needs different care ingredients. Your shower gel, for example, has significantly more refatting active ingredients than your shampoo. Occasionally, as an emergency solution, it's not a problem to wash your hair with a shower gel, but it won't sit as well afterward and will get greasy faster. In the long run, however, this would disturb the balance of your scalp too much.
