Skincare for Men – Tips for Well-Groomed Men's Skin
Skincare is no longer just a woman's concern. More and more men value a well-groomed appearance. Good clothing style and a fashionable haircut alone are not enough. Skin should be healthy and beautiful, so you should make skincare an integral part of your grooming routine — especially during the cold season. You can learn how to perfectly tailor your skincare to your skin and what to pay attention to in this article.
What does men's skin need? Know your skin type
Your skin is your largest organ and is exposed daily to all sorts of environmental influences like cold, heat, sun exposure, and fine dust. To keep your skin looking young and well-groomed for a long time, it needs at least a minimum of skincare. If you think that using your girlfriend's or roommate's moisturizer once a week is enough, we unfortunately have to disappoint you: women's and men's skin are fundamentally different and have different needs. Due to higher testosterone levels and increased sebum production, men's skin is thicker and more robust, but it is also more prone to impurities, for example. To ensure your skin gets exactly what it needs, it's important to know your own skin type. With a little observation, you can easily determine your skin type yourself:
Sensitive Skin
You can recognize sensitive skin by the fact that it quickly reddens and most products make it itch or burn. Therefore, you should avoid skincare products with ingredients like alcohol, parabens, colorants, or fragrances and instead use care specifically developed for sensitive men's skin.
Dry Skin
You can best recognize dry skin by your T-zone. The T-zone is nothing more than the forehead, nose, and chin area. If these areas are dull, then you can assume you have dry skin. In this case, rich moisturizers are particularly suitable, as long as you don't have problems with impurities.
Oily Skin
Oily skin can be recognized by a very oily T-zone. Observe whether your skin surface shines intensely. This is an indication that your skin is oily and needs lighter skincare. This includes mattifying moisturizers and gels, which you should ideally use in the morning. In the evening, a light serum is suitable for revitalizing your skin overnight.
Normal or Combination Skin
You recognize normal or combination skin by a slightly shiny skin surface. Here, balance is key. Provide it with a neutral facial care that moisturizes without weighing it down with additional oils.
Start with cleansed skin
First, remove the dirt and excess oils that have accumulated on your facial skin throughout the day so that your moisturizer can absorb properly. For daily skin cleansing, mild face washes are particularly suitable as they do not overstress men's skin. For an even skin tone, it is advisable to incorporate an exfoliant into your facial care routine. It's best to exfoliate your skin once a week to remove dead skin cells, giving it a fresher and healthier appearance.
Skincare for Men – The Right Care for Face & Body
We fully understand those who don't want elaborate skincare routines. However, a few basics shouldn't be missing from your face and body care. You'll now learn what your skin really needs and how to best care for it.
How should men care for their skin?
Cleanse your face and body thoroughly to remove dirt and prepare your skin optimally for care. When choosing a face wash and shower gel, make sure the products match your skin type. After cleansing, your skin needs moisture. Depending on your skin type, it's best to use a moisturizer or a light gel for your face. For those with beards: depending on the length and structure of your beard, use a beard balm and beard oil to keep the hair supple and to moisturize the skin under the beard. If you use styling products for your beard, you should definitely make sure to remove residues with a beard shampoo every evening.
Men's Face / Skincare in Summer
Summer, sun, sunshine might be great for your mood, but your skin has a lot to deal with in summer. UV radiation is unfortunately the biggest enemy of healthy, youthful skin. Sun protection for face and body is therefore non-negotiable, as they say. In summer, you can switch to lighter formulations for your skincare products.
Face / Skincare for Men in Winter
Dry heating air and biting cold - winter puts healthy skin to the test. What your skin needs now is a lot of love and an extra portion of moisture. For creams and body lotions, opt for richer formulas and use gentle cleansing products to avoid overstraining your skin.
Haircare for Men
There are now a lot of hair care products, and you probably don't need half of them. The rule of thumb here is: fewer, but high-quality products like a mild and moisturizing shampoo and good plant oils. How often you should wash your hair depends on how much sebum you produce and how many styling products you use. You can find out more about this in our hair care article.
5 Tips for Well-Groomed Men's Skin
Disinfect your smartphone
How often do you actually disinfect your smartphone? You're probably like most people, and the answer is 'Not often enough'. Yet, your display collects a lot of dirt and bacteria every day. That's why you should clean your screen regularly. Your skin will thank you for it!
Keep your hands off your face
Even if it's difficult: try not to touch your face with unwashed hands, and never, ever, ever squeeze pimples and blackheads. This can worsen blemishes and lead to nasty inflammations.
Eat a healthy diet
Yes, yes, admittedly, we've all heard the phrase 'You are what you eat' from our mothers one too many times. But it's true. Your diet plays a major role in the health of your skin. Avoid large amounts of alcohol, sugar, and highly processed foods, and make sure you eat enough fruits and vegetables. Easy as that.
Drink enough
Water. We mean water, of course. Our body is largely made up of water, and our skin needs a lot of moisture to stay healthy and fresh. Depending on your physical activity, you should drink at least 1.5 litres per day. A rule of thumb is: Approximately 1ml of water per 1kcal per day. For 2,500 kcal, this means 2.5 litres per day for adults.
Be active
Exercise is important for body and mind and is a real hack for healthy skin. Exercise stimulates blood circulation in the skin, which improves the supply of oxygen and nutrients. When we sweat, our pores also open up, allowing sebum and dirt to drain more easily. After exercising, you should therefore clean your face and provide it with light care.
