What to do if your beard sticks out?

There are many factors that can cause your beard hairs to stick out: from the growth direction dictated by your hair follicles to dryness and diet. Also during the growth phase from a short to a long beard, your hairs will grow unevenly and crookedly, especially in the initial phase. This usually sorts itself out after a few weeks. Especially with curly beard hair, one or two curls might not cooperate, causing individual hairs to stick out. Or your beard might simply look very bushy due to the curls. There's nothing wrong with that, but if it bothers you, there are easy ways to fix it. The solutions are as numerous as the causes.

How do I get a smooth beard?

There are two different ways to get your beard back in shape. This depends on how coarse and long your beard is and on your personal preference.

Option 1: Beard oil

You probably already use beard oil. Besides its nourishing properties, you can also influence the structure and shape a little with it. However, this is only suitable for a shorter or not very unruly beard.
For a very dry beard, we recommend our beard softener. Additionally, you can also use a beard brush to distribute the nourishing oil and smooth your beard hairs.

Option 2: Hairdryer and straightener

Especially with particularly unruly beard hairs, heat is the easiest and achieves the best results. However, it is more time-consuming, and too much heat can damage your beard in the long run.

A hairdryer with heat control is best, as it allows you to avoid excessive heat. After washing and grooming your beard, you can use a brush or comb to brush your beard in the desired direction and follow with the hairdryer. Make sure to keep a distance of 10-15 cm to avoid damaging your beard with the heat.

For straightening, you can either use your girlfriend's (or yours), or get a mini straightener. The latter is significantly easier to handle and also heats up faster. Let your beard hairs dry completely first, brush them into shape a bit, and then carefully start straightening.
The result will be particularly smooth! However, since your beard hairs are directly exposed to strong heat, we recommend not using a straightener daily.

3 tips for a soft, smooth beard

#1: Wash beard with beard soap & nourish with beard oil

Regardless of whether you want to straighten your beard or not, you should wash it regularly. It's best to get into a short beard care routine: wash your beard with lukewarm water and every three days with a beard shampoo. You can find out why you should avoid conventional shampoo here.

Rinse out the beard shampoo thoroughly and then gently pat your beard dry. Now you're spoiled for choice: Argan oil and Jojoba oil are particularly effective nourishing oils that provide moisture and reduce itching and flaking. Castor oil, on the other hand, can stimulate beard growth. A beard oil helps slightly frizzy hair to take on a smoother shape.

#2: Regularly comb and detangle beard with a beard brush

Now you can blow-dry your beard with the help of a beard brush and thus straighten it. For a longer beard, a round brush is also a good choice. First, you should thoroughly detangle your beard hairs, and then straighten them with the brush and follow with the hairdryer.

#3: Beard balm for styling

A beard wax or beard balm helps your beard hairs maintain your desired beard style. A beard wax or oil and a beard brush in your pocket are a good duo to get your beard hairs back in shape in the afternoon.

FAQ

Are there home remedies for a scraggly beard?

Our star ingredient, Aloe Vera, makes an appearance here too: The gel from the plant can smooth frizzy hair and condition your beard. Simply leave it on for a few minutes and rinse with water. If you don't have beard oil on hand, a high-quality coconut oil will also work. Either leave it on like the Aloe Vera gel and rinse, or use it directly for styling. However, for a very frizzy beard, a blow dryer or straightener is almost indispensable.

How can I permanently straighten my beard?

That will be difficult. Since hair growth is continuous and new frizzy hair grows back, there is no way to permanently straighten your beard. Chemical straightening or a keratin treatment can help to straighten your beard for a longer period, but inform yourself about the risks and effects of these treatments and consider if it's really worth it for you.

What's better: beard oil or beard balm?

A beard oil nourishes your beard hair and the skin underneath even more than a styling product like beard balm. However, a beard wax can tame your beard hair more and provide hold. One doesn't exclude the other. You can use beard oil as part of your grooming routine and then reach for a styling product.
