If you're not ready yet, check out our tips for growing a beard or stimulating it .

Perfectly styled in five steps: this is how you trim your full beard yourself and get it in shape
The easiest way is of course to go to the barber. They know exactly what they're doing and you can just relax. If you're really unsure or would rather watch a professional first, feel free to do that. Otherwise, the whole thing isn't that difficult - with the right tools, tips and a little practice, you can easily do it yourself. You should first gather the following things: beard shampoo , shaving oil or foam, a beard brush , possibly a beard comb and beard scissors , a beard trimmer, a safety razor , aftershave and, if you like, grooming products such as beard oil or similar and, of course, beard wax . Oh yes, and a little time and patience too, of course.

Tips from the barber: Inka from Herrengut Barbershop in Hamburg gives you professional advice for the perfect beard routine at home.
Trimming, contouring and maintaining a full beard
Step #1: Wash your beard and let it dry
Yup, we're not going to start with the trimming right away. First, you need to wash all the residue out of your beard. This will also make it easier to trim all the hairs to the same length later. Please use a beard shampoo here – whether liquid or solid doesn't matter. We've briefly explained why you shouldn't use hair shampoo or any other soap here . So wash your beard quickly, pat it dry with a towel, and then let it air dry, although you can also use a hairdryer in a pinch. Be careful not to wash for too long, or your beard hairs will become too soft. And while you're at it – wash your hands too, since you'll be touching your face a lot.

Step #2: Comb or brush your beard hair
If your beard is already several centimeters long, grab a beard comb first. A beard brush should work just fine, but depending on the length, a comb may be better at untangles. Brush in the direction your hair grows. If you're blow-drying your hair, combine the two steps. Once your hair is properly brushed, you can move on to the next step.

Step #3: Trim and/or cut your full beard
For a long, full beard, beard scissors are recommended—they allow you to work more precisely and reduce the risk of cutting off too much. Simply stand in front of a mirror and look at what you don't like about your beard, or what you'd like to trim. Perhaps one side is rounder than the other, or you'd like to make your beard more tapered. A comb can help here if you don't want to trim freehand. Scissors are particularly suitable for touch-ups or detailed work, but also for trimming your beard. Even individual, stray, or significantly longer hairs can be trimmed directly.

Now start trimming your beard.
Make sure you use the right attachment. If you're unsure which length suits you best, start with a larger number of millimeters and work your way up. How and where you start is up to you, but we suggest an order recommended by Herrengut Barbershop:

1. Trim from the level of your earlobes to the top of your ear against the direction of hair growth
2. Using a longer attachment, trim your cheeks up to the corners of your mouth in the direction of hair growth – including above the lip. If you'd prefer a goatee or other upper lip beard style, check it out here.
3. Now, using an even larger attachment, trim everything below the corners of your mouth, again in the direction of hair growth. Here, too, it's better to start longer and gradually shorten until you're happy with the length.
4. Trim below the lip again with a shorter attachment in the direction of hair growth.

Step #4: Trim the contours of the full beard
Happy with the length? Now it's time for the contours. These are, by the way, one of the most important things. They can even emphasize, enhance, or conceal your facial features. Use the beard trimmer (without an attachment) to draw a straight contour line around your lips and neck. Use your Adam's apple as a guide for the neckline. Traditionally, the contour line is drawn on an imaginary line from here to your ears, or a finger-width or two above – but once again: your face, your beard, your style. You decide your contours for your face.
The cheek contour depends on your beard growth – if it grows down to your cheekbones and you like that, you can draw your line higher from your mustache to your sideburns; if it grows irregularly or less tall, you can draw it lower.

Now it's time for a thorough shave: Moisten your skin, lather it with shaving oil , cream, or foam, and use a safety razor or straight razor to cleanly shave the contours of your neck and cheeks in the direction of hair growth. To avoid razor burn and pimples, follow our tips in this article . Then, rinse your beard with clean water and remove any shaving residue. Then apply either an aftershave serum or aftershave balm .

Step #5: Care, style and shape
Whether you choose beard oil or beard softener depends on how much care your beard needs. For very dry hair, we recommend the latter. Now brush your beard thoroughly again, checking that everything has been trimmed evenly. If necessary, trim with beard scissors or a trimmer .

How to get your beard in perfect shape
With a round brush, hairdryer, and beard wax or beard wax, you can give your full beard the perfect shape. Make sure the hairdryer isn't set too hot, as this will only dry out your beard hairs. Place the brush directly at the roots and smooth the beard hairs along their entire length. To maintain the shape all day, simply rub some beard wax or wax between your fingertips and distribute it evenly throughout your beard. Now brush over it again, and that's it!

My beard grows in all directions and I just can't get it straight when blow-dried. What can I do?
Have you ever considered using a flat iron? Since they get very hot, use a heat protectant spray beforehand and—for many people—don't set the straightener to maximum power. This will allow you to style your beard the way you like it until your next wash. Note: Your hair should be absolutely dry, and you should only apply hair care products after straightening.
