Avoid razor burn: 5 tips against razor burn on the neck

Redness, itching, swelling, pimples. None of them are particularly serious, but they're not exactly feel-good boosters either. Razor burn often resembles a rash, and it's never a good thing. We'll now explain what razor burn is, how to prevent it, and what to do in an emergency.

This is how you can easily prevent razor bumps and razor burn

In our video we show you how to prevent razor bumps and razor burn.

What is razor burn and how does it occur?

Razor burn is usually caused by incorrect shaving technique. This often causes inflammation of the hair root, which can lead to pain that lasts for several days. If the hair doesn't grow through the intended growth duct but changes direction, small bumps develop under which the hair continues to grow. Whether with or without pus – from discomfort to abscesses that can form as a result – we would rather avoid it altogether. Since the neck is particularly sensitive, razor burn is quite common here. Added to this is the strong, thick hair in the beard, which also increases the risk of razor burn. If you only notice slight redness and irritation on your face after shaving, this should subside within a few hours. However, serious razor burn can last up to a week or longer.

How to prevent unpleasant razor burn

With these simple tips and home remedies, you can prevent razor burn during your next shave:

1. Prepare skin for shaving

The skin is the body's largest organ and also very sensitive. Therefore, you should always take your time when shaving. Before shaving, place a warm, damp towel on your face for a few minutes. This will soften the beard hairs slightly, open the pores, protect and soothe sensitive skin, and thus protect and ease the shave. It works like a small miracle.

2. DON'T: Avoid dry shaving

In general, men should avoid dry shaving, especially if their sensitive skin is prone to razor burn. Whether you use shaving foam, shaving oil , or shaving gel, the protective film prevents redness, rashes, skin irritation, itching, or razor bumps. If you don't have anything on hand, you can also use coconut oil or a conditioner first.

3. How to: Shave properly

It may sound obvious, but you might be shaving incorrectly. Especially if you have sensitive skin, you should start by shaving in the direction of hair growth. This way, you won't pull the hairs against the direction of growth, and you'll also be more likely to catch ingrown hairs. Press your razor very lightly against your skin and let the blade(s) glide gently. If the result isn't smooth enough in some areas, you can shave against the direction of hair growth afterward, as your beard hairs are already extremely short. Important: Don't forget to reapply shaving foam, gel, or similar!

If you notice any ingrown hairs before shaving, try gently removing them with disinfected tweezers. It also helps to start shaving on your cheeks. The hairs there are often finer and take less time to soften than thicker hairs. We also have a great video and another article on how to shave your beard properly .

4. Must-Have: Sharp and clean razor blades

Yup, it should be obvious, but it's often forgotten. Whether you're using a straight razor or a conventional razor , you shouldn't go without sharp razor blades . The blunter the blade, the harder you press your razor against your skin—and we now know that's not good. Likewise, your razor blades should always be clean. There are small brushes that help remove dead skin particles and hair from the razor head. Dry the blades after shaving to prevent rust. You can also disinfect them before your next shave. Oh, and sharing razors isn't the best idea, by the way...
However, regularly changing blades or shaving (if you use disposable razors) creates a lot of waste. If sustainability is important to you, consider safety razors or straight razors. These aren't new products, but rather tried-and-true razors where only the blades need to be replaced or sharpened, not the entire five-blade plastic head. Or you could invest in a razor with lifetime sharp blades.

5. Aftershave care

After shaving is before shaving. Okay, that was a bit silly, but it's true. Especially if you tend to have dry skin, you should moisturize your skin sufficiently after shaving. First, you should thoroughly and gently remove any remaining shaving cream or shaving oil .

Natural care products are best afterward, as skin is particularly irritated and sensitive after shaving, making it more prone to razor burn. This means avoiding products containing alcohol and opting for creams with ingredients like aloe vera. Aftershave isn't suitable for everyone. Aftershaves have antibacterial properties and prevent inflammation, and can also be soothing and moisturizing. However, if you generally tend to have dry skin, you should look for aftershave creams . These are milder and provide extra moisture.

Great ingredients for both aftershave products are:

Aloe Vera is very moisturizing and soothing

Tea tree oil has an antibacterial and cooling effect

Vitamin E prevents inflammation

Chamomile has a healing and calming effect

The important thing now is to leave your skin alone for a while. Don't scratch or constantly touch your face—you really don't need any more bacteria. Of course, your skin will also appreciate a few days without a razor blade!

SOS razor burn

You didn't have enough time, the water wasn't heating up, and today you ran out of shaving cream. Here are a few things that will help right away:

ice cubes

Ice cubes are a first aid measure if razor burn literally causes a burning sensation. But don't use them for longer than 3-4 minutes at a time, or you risk frostbite.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera – preferably fresh, of course. Cut off one of the larger, outer leaves as close to the root as possible. Let the leaf stand with the cut side down for a few minutes to allow the aloin-containing sap to drain. Then remove the outer layer of the leaf and collect the inner, transparent gel in a bowl. You can then either process it further with a blender or apply it directly to your skin. The plant has a cooling, soothing, and highly moisturizing effect.

Baby powder

Baby powder soothes sensitive skin. Leave on briefly and rinse off.

chamomile

Pour hot water over chamomile tea bags, flowers (or oil), let it steep and cool, and then dab it onto your skin with a clean (!) washcloth.

Care routine

In general, you should care for your skin not only before, during, and after shaving, but always. Every day, it is contaminated by various bacteria, dirt, etc. and appreciates it when you give it some attention. Don't worry, you don't need an infinite number of products; often, less is even more. FAQ

Why spray aftershave instead of rubbing it on?

Razor burn won't go away?

Have you followed all the tips, but your skin still itches? Is your post-shave rash painful and your skin doesn't calm down even after a few days? Then head to the dermatologist. It doesn't have to be anything serious, but it can't hurt to get it checked out.

Is one blade better than five?

Five blades often shave faster and more closely than one. However, this also puts more strain on the skin. Furthermore, the blades in a safety razor are usually considerably sharper and more precisely manufactured than the multiple blades in a system razor. In addition to the sustainability aspect and the lower cost of purchasing individual blades for a safety razor, the skin is particularly soft after shaving with the single, sharp blade.
