Shaving your beard: 3 steps to a perfect shave
Learn how to shave your beard properly.
First, the question arises: dry or wet shaving? There's no general answer. A wet shave is closer and allows for precise contours, but it takes longer and requires more preparation. The razor glides smoothly over the skin and protects it with shaving oil or foam . However, the blades need to be changed frequently, otherwise you risk pimples and inflammation. A dry shave is faster and often gentler on the skin, but sometimes leaves stubble, especially with heavy beard growth. No matter what you choose, remember to care for your skin afterward.

I. Your skin decides which shaving type you are
Since every skin type has its own requirements, there are different razors and care products for every skin need. If your skin is extremely sensitive after shaving, a dry shave with an electric razor and gentle care products may be a better choice. It's important to know your skin type to avoid pain, inflammation, and irritation. Not sure where to classify your skin type? Then take a look at this article and consider which category you would place yourself in.

#1: Dry skin
In general, an electric razor is gentler on your skin. If you do decide to shave wet, leave the shaving foam , soap, or gel on long enough, use sharp blades, and always shave in the direction of hair growth to avoid razor burn and breakouts. Be sure to use an aftershave afterward! Natural products like aloe vera have a particularly cooling effect. If you opt for a dry shave, consider a pre-shave product: It helps raise the beard hairs and ensures a smoother shave. Whether wet or dry, a rich aftercare regimen is a must, ideally with products for sensitive skin like an aftershave balm.
#2: Normal and combination skin
Good luck! You can do whatever you want, but be kind to your skin and follow the steps below.
#3: Oily skin
The pre-shave routine is especially important here: cleansing with a good scrub is half the battle. A dry shave is recommended here for similar reasons as with dry skin. Oily skin is just as prone to razor burn and breakouts.
II. When is the right time to shave?
After showering, your beard hairs are softened and your pores are open, perfect conditions for a close and smooth shave, especially when wet shaving with our safety razor . Shaving before showering can be beneficial if you want to rinse off skincare products with warm water or remove residue. Our tip: If you have sensitive skin or are prone to ingrown hairs, shave after showering.

III. The shaving tools of the well-groomed man
Let's be honest: A razor and shaving brush holder brings a classy 1950s flair to your bathroom. But razors aren't as easy to handle as electric trimmers or safety razors . In our fast-paced world, there's often less than 15 minutes in the bathroom in the morning, and a razor, a lack of time, and sleepy eyes? Ouch. Luckily, there are plenty of alternatives that we'll introduce to you so you can shave properly and avoid nasty scars.

#1: The razor
The classic among tools. There are no compromises. Quality has its price. Because a razor comes with soap and a brush. Please don't compromise on that; you're not doing anyone a favor. Alternatively, you can also use shaving cream or gel. The main thing is that it lathers.
Before every shave, you must ensure that the razor blade is sharpened. Sharpening is best achieved with a leather strop. This is always used when the razor is pulling on the beard hairs rather than cutting them. If you are not sure how to sharpen your razor, there are plenty of barbers who will show you how or where you can take your razor from time to time. The effort is worth it; straight razors simply produce great results. The razor should be held at an angle of 30° to 40°. To begin with, it is recommended to shave with the grain. For small improvements, you can then shave against the grain in certain spots (!). To start with, smooth surfaces, such as the cheek, are suitable for testing out your talent with the razor and getting a feel for it.
#2: The dry shaver
Since the electric razor was invented in the 1930s, 60% of men have been using dry shaving. Why? It's simple, uncomplicated, and gentle. While it's not as thorough as a wet razor, it's definitely gentler on your skin. Perfect if you already have sensitive skin. And if you're aiming for a three-day beard anyway, this is a definite choice. Because dry shaving never gives a completely smooth shave, so some stubble will always remain.
#3: The wet razor
It's a really thorough shave, so you might not even have to shave every day. Plus, you don't have to rely on modern electricity, and theoretically you could shave in a cabin somewhere in the woods. However, the risk of injury is higher. And even if you don't injure yourself during the actual shave, your skin can still become very irritated. That's why additional pre- and aftershave products are necessary. They soften the hair before shaving and hair removal, and they soothe your skin afterward. Important: Always use sharp blades, like the ones on our safety razor .
#4: The beard trimmer
Perfect if you don't want to shave your beard off completely, but just want to shape it . Three-day beard? A well-groomed look with a bit of length? Need to reshape your contours? With a good trimmer , this is easy, quick and without pulling. Unlike with a wet or dry shave, the natural structure of your beard is preserved - you just decide how wild or neat you want it to look. And if you think all trimmers are the same - nope. The Brooklyn Blade was developed for men who are serious about their beard care . Sharp stainless steel blades, strong battery life and a design that also looks good next to your sink. Simple, precise, strong - just like your beard.
Here we show you how to use the blade on our safety razor:
