Impure Skin in Men
The 3 most common causes and what you can do about acne & pimples
Pimples, impure skin or acne are not uncommon, but that doesn't make them any less annoying. Impurities are not limited to puberty. Whether on the face, back or shoulders, pimples are still common for many men. With the right body and face care routine and a balanced diet, you can get rid of impurities and even prevent them. Here are the most common reasons for impurities and what you can do about them!
The most common causes of impure skin
Hormones play an important role here. Testosterone leads to increased sebaceous gland activity, which makes your skin greasier. In combination with dead skin cells, this excess sebum clogs your pores, which leads to unsightly blackheads. If these then come into contact with bacteria, pimples develop.
Heredity also plays a role, as do certain medications that can promote skin impurities. Alcohol increases your sebum production, as does stress or strong sun exposure. Incorrect care, insufficient or overly aggressive cleansing are also contributing factors.
Why is men's skin prone to acne & pimples?
Even though men's skin is thicker than women's skin and therefore more robust, sebum production is stronger and therefore more prone to clogged pores and thus pimples.
After shaving or generally under your beard, you often notice small pimples and redness. These often arise from micro-injuries, ingrown hairs or germs. You can find out how to best deal with this in our article on razor burn.
If you frequently suffer from pimples and impurities, you should ask your dermatologist for help. They can tell you exactly what is best for your skin and, if necessary, recommend antibacterial or even antibiotic creams.
The right facial care & facial cleansing for impure men's skin
First, you should know your skin type. Whether dry, oily or normal – every skin type needs individual care. A good cleansing gel for thorough skin cleansing is an absolute must. A chemical or mechanical peeling is a useful addition, as it frees your pores from dirt, excess sebum, dead skin cells and ingrown hairs. It is important here to use a facial peeling for your face and a body peeling for your body. It sounds trivial, but the peeling grains for your face must be smaller and the product adapted to your facial skin. Don't forget a nourishing cream, because if your skin is too dry, you will only stimulate your sebum production more, which then leads to overly oily skin. We have summarized the most important steps for you here:
Step 1: Wash hands thoroughly
Step 2: Cleanse face with lukewarm water
Step 3: Cleanse face morning and evening with a high-quality facial cleansing gel
Step 4: Use a chemical or mechanical facial scrub twice a week
Step 5: Rinse thoroughly with cold water
Step 6: Pat face dry with a clean towel
Step 7: Use a nourishing product depending on skin type and time of day: day cream, night cream, eye cream
Step 8: For bearded men: Read the article on razor burn and implement the steps.
For acne, we ask you to consult your dermatologist - they know best what your skin currently needs.

Getting rid of and preventing pimples and acne on your back
Most sebaceous glands in men are located on the face and back, which means pimples are particularly common here. Similar to blemishes on the face, a good and thorough care routine helps here too. When it comes to pimples on the back, clothing also plays an important role. For example, synthetic, air-impermeable clothing makes you sweat more, which clogs pores and promotes blemished skin. After sports, you should wash off sweat quickly.
4 Tips: What helps best against blemished skin?
Tip 1: Hands off!
Yes, it's tempting. Yes, it's hard not to squeeze. But you're only making it harder for yourself. The bacteria on your hands can worsen inflammation, promote acne, and leave behind pimple marks.
Tip 2: Pay attention to a healthy diet & a healthy lifestyle
You are what you eat. Your diet and lifestyle have a big impact on your overall appearance, including your pimples. Choose fruits and vegetables more often than fast food or foods with a high glycemic index (white bread, sugar, saturated fats). Dairy products also promote inflammation and can worsen it. You don't have to completely change your diet overnight, but try to pay a little more attention to it every day. Your body, especially your skin, will also thank you for drinking enough water!
Tip 3: Cleansing, peeling & cream – The right care
Less is more, but too little is also not good. Invest in a few high-quality care products and implement them into your face and beard care routine. Natural cosmetics with few, highly effective ingredients, such as our products from Brooklyn Soap, are a good choice. Your skin type can also change over time, so always check whether your current facial care still suits you.
You can find more information in the article on facial care.
Tip 4: Wrong shave?
Every shave irritates your skin. If you use a system razor, for example, three to five blades glide over the same spot at the same time, often taking the top layer of skin with them. This makes it easy for germs and razor burn to occur, and inflammation is not uncommon. This is one reason why more and more men are turning to safety razors , as the single, sharp blade irritates your skin less. In addition to choosing the right razor, it is also important to have a good pre- and aftershave routine and to make the shave itself as gentle as possible. FAQ
When does acne stop for men?
Often after puberty, as hormone levels rebalance. However, acne can always occur, as there are many significant factors for blemished skin. So it's not tied to age, even if there's a higher probability of acne in phases. So if you suddenly (again) notice acne long after puberty, that's completely normal and you can get it under control relatively easily.
Which home remedies help against blemished skin?
The biggest home remedy is probably your diet and enough water. In addition, zinc ointment, aloe vera, healing earth or tea tree oil help with blemished skin. You can also mix your own scrub from chamomile tea, healing earth and a little salt if you don't have good natural cosmetics at hand and it's urgent.
